The Australian public have been fortunate enough to have every breath, blink and step of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit covered by a very dedicated and desperate Aussie media industry. However, the Advocate has managed to find an angle of the royal story that has yet to be touched.

Meghan Markle’s name. Can we just pause everything for a second and talk about the fact that English people pronounce it Meh-Gn. Not Me-Ghan.

After realising this unique insight that wasn’t offered by the royal guard day-to-day, or every new stort. The Advocate reached out to Australia’s top linguist to see why on Earth they’re insisting it’s pronounced Meh-Gn instead of how everyone else called Megan says their name.

“Well, it could be a clever media tactic taken by the Royal family” said Giles Boutrand, lead linguist at the Australian Words Association.

“They’ve changed the pronunciation of this common name to make her sound more regal”

“Much like how people pronounce Target with a soft ‘g’”

Australians who seem to be comfortable with the idea of saying meh-gn are also most likely to refer to Prince Harry and ‘our Hareee’ or ‘Diana’s littlest’.
