The long-time receptionist at the Betoota Shire Council offices is moving on to a new role across town and her sister is due to replace her as she was the only suitable candidate, a council spokesperson has said.
Under Section 10a of the local government charter, all prospective employees of the Shire Council need to be related (by blood) to an existing employee of the council.
Which is why Melanie Proctor was selected to replace her sister Velcro from a pool of dozens.
“We had a large number of outstanding candidates for the position,” said the council spokesperson.
“However, under the current employment rules here at the council, the only person qualified to replace Velcro Proctor was her sister Melanie.”
The council also rejects allegations of nepotism and corruption, explaining that the current rules were put in place years ago by Melanie and Velcro’s father, Robitussin.
“It’s just the way we do things around here,” the spokesperson explained.
“We invite the Crime and Corruption Commission to come out here, like they do every two or three years, to comb through our books and make sure it’s all above board. Because it is – and there’s nothing you can do to stop it all from being above board.”
