A tropical low moving towards Queensland’s south-east has developed into a category one tropical cyclone, meteorologists say that it’s a big enough concern to give it the same name as a generic middle class tuck shop mum.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said they finally decided on naming the weather pattern ‘Tropical Cyclone Linda’ – but are concerned they will run out of names soon and go back to middle class footy coach dad named like ‘Cyclone Larry’.

“Doesn’t look to be as bad as Tracey, but it’ll top Monica, possibly Marcia and Debbie” said one BOM spokesman.

Linda is located in the Coral Sea, about 880 kilometres north-east of Sandy Cape and 1,100km east of Mackay and is expected to continue to move south-west towards the Queensland coast for the next 24 hours, before turning south and ultimately south-east away from the coast.

The BOM said the cyclone would generate “large waves and dangerous surf conditions” on exposed southern Queensland beaches, and that Linda was the perfect name, because it’s gonna be a real yeller.

Tides were also expected to be higher than normal, particularly on Thursday, the BOM said.

On Wednesday, it is predicted TC Linda will transition into an intense subtropical low as conditions become unfavourable.

More to come.
