A local girl’s attempt to whip up a healthy meal has been thwarted today after she unknowingly garnished her meal with some toxic chemicals.
Having spent the weekend surviving on cheese boards and a late-night halal snack pack, Claire Fishbowl (28) thought she’d get back on track with a nutritious bowl of Hawaiian inspired goodness.
Pimping out a bowl with shredded carrot, diced cucumbers, hunks of avo and some freshly canned tuna, Claire began crafting a pretty colourful homemade poke bowl, one that would’ve cost her $19 at the shops.
Yet as she waited for her cup of rice to bing out of the microwave, little did she know she was about to boost up the meal with some dauntingly named ‘forever chemicals’.
For those not up to speed with the latest everyday thing that will kill you, forever chemicals are synthetic substances known as PFAS, that are highly toxic and keep turning up in everything from non-stick pans to food packaging.
The complex group of chemicals are so cooked that they’ve been linked to a whole range of health issues including cancer, liver problems, thyroid issues, birth defects, kidney disease and decreased immunity.
Speaking to Claire as she began to shovel the rice into her bowl, she admits there’s probably healthier ways to prepare her meal next time, so that her dinner isn’t laced with burnt plastics.
“Yeah that’s a bit cooked, I’m just trying to get some vitamins in my system but now I’m not so hungry” Claire told our reporter.
“I suppose next time I could spill the rice out, toss the plastic and just nuke it in the bowl instead, or spend an extra 10 minutes and cook the rice from scratch.”
“Is it worth it thought, that always feels like it takes forever!”
