The city of Melbourne has sensationally asked to become a member of the European Union this afternoon.

The Betoota Advocate can exclusively reveal the country’s self-titled ‘most European city’ has quietly applied to join the EU and take the United Kingdom’s spot.

This comes after British Prime Minister Theresa May looks to get the Brexit deal finished up.

The Council explained that the city sensed an opportunity to chase it’s dream and went for it.

“We have sent the paperwork through, and have our fingers crossed that we get accepted,” a spokesperson said.

“I mean, despite being on the other side of the world, it just makes so much sense for our city to join the EU. We are far more culturally aligned with continental Europe than places like Sydney and Brisbane,” the spokesperson laughed.

“I mean god, look at our trams, our bookshop-cafes, our little laneways, our bohemian culture, our tribal following of sports teams, and our irrational fear of migrant gangs. It’s perfect.”

The spokesperson told The Advocate that the would be happy to cop whatever negative economic and trade implications flow from joining the union.

“It will be all worth it. It’s what our beautiful city deserves. I mean, have you been to Revolver, that’s like a little taste of Berlin,” said the spokesperson.

It’s believed the European Union will make a decision on the application in the 2-4 weeks.

More to come.
