As the polls continue to tighten in the final days of the 2022 Federal Election Campaign, Australians are once again preparing up to three weeks of Bob Katter being the most powerful man in the country.

In the case of a hung parliament, it comes down to crossbenchers like the Member for Kennedy to decide which of the two major parties they will support.

These are the moments that Bob Katter lives and breathes for, in the 2010 Federal Election result all came down to the Independent MPs, Bob Katter, Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott – who were all former members of the National Party. However, all three said they would be open to negotiating with either side to form government. They said they would engage in discussion as a bloc but vote individually. After more than twenty days Katter declared his support for the Coalition on confidence and supply. Later that day, Windsor and Oakeshott declared their support for Labor on confidence and supply, giving Labor Prime Minister Julia Gillard just enough support to form government.

However, despite being on the wrong side of the election, Katter’s loyalty was rewarded greatly by the eventual Abbott government – who gave the Kennedy Electorate everything he ever asked for, from dams to railroads to new highways.

With far more crossbenchers expected in the lower house next week, the teal independents are refusing to reveal who they will choose to form government, with most people just assuming they’ll go with the Liberals on the proviso that Scott Morrison is removed as leader.

However, if the polls are to be believed, this might not be enough for the Coalition – meaning that the entire political system comes down to one man.

The honorable Robert Katter III, a man with a lot of favours to ask.

With the current Liberal Party now a completely different beast to the Abbott Government, Bob is now in a position where he can start banking up favours all over again.

On top of that, Opposition leader Anthony Albanese has been working on securing the Katter family’s support for over three decades with constant trips out to North-West Queensland to spend time with people of Kennedy and Bob.

Although, as Bob makes it clear, these kinds of personal niceties mean nothing during a hung parliament.

Today the Maverick North-West Queensland MP has invited the entire Canberra press gallery into his office to discuss his options.
