The Betoota Advocate would like to formally congratulate Betoota Mutts legend Steve ‘Mudguts’ Maguire on reaching the incredible 400 game milestone.

Mudguts now enters a hallowed Bundy Betoota Muttaburrasaurus Hall Of Fame, joining an elite crowd of 5 other former greats.

The much loved club figure who missed his 3rd child’s birth for the final game of the 2017 season (and the bus trip to Bedourie), reached the milestone last month, coming off the bench for 2nds in the 40-7 semi-final loss to Windorah.

The 400 gamer has had a storied career, playing every position except for lock, and still holds the unofficial and hotly disputed record for longest Wizard Stick.

Mudguts started off on the wing in under 16s before slowly gaining the confidence to play at full back, and a shift into the tighter play making positions as he grew more experienced and his speed left him in his mid 20s.

With his metabolism slowing down, and his rampant drinking and poor diet catching up with him, the big fella eventually made the shift into the forwards, holding off the eventual slide into the front row where former backs go to die as slowly as possible.

Still plying his trade at hooker, where he likes to seagull on the wing or throw 4 man cut out passes to the winger who is about to get his ribs broken from the hospital pass, Mudguts has shown the kind of club spirit that has made the Betoota Mutts the club that they are today.

From running on countless times for higher grades after a few beers and a couple of darts – to forcing the colties to drink red goon on any bus trip away – to pressuring blokes into doing more questionable physical activities – Mudguts has earned the right to go down in club folklore.

His relentless heckling of opposition wingers and anyone wearing skins with some questionable sledges will long be cherished by anyone with the club, and his full blown benders are a thing of beauty for anyone that gets to come along for the ride.

The big rig is promising to go round again in 2021, with some vague chat about potentially trying to overtake Graham Watson’s 462 game record, so the ride isn’t over just yet.

But, for now, the bloke who prides himself in being able to skull a jug in sub 10 seconds is enjoying the off-season, repping his Mutts Smugglers at every opportunity, and wallowing in the pride that comes with being able to call yourself a 400 gamer!

Congratulations Mudguts!
