The Sydney Swans have named every member of their team as captain for this weekend’s must-win clash against South Perth, with every decision to be put to a vote.
The announcement comes ahead of the crucial match, where all on-field choices, from set shots to strategic changes, will be decided by a show of hands from the entire team. Players will take turns discussing tactics, making decisions collaboratively, and ultimately guiding the team through what is expected to be a high-pressure encounter.
“We believe this is the next evolution in leadership for the Swans,” coach Dean Cox said.
“In the past, we’ve had co-captains and leadership groups, but now we’re taking it to the next level. Every player will have an equal say, and every decision will be made together. It’s all about a collective team effort.”
The decision to name everyone captain, however, has left some scratching their heads but willing to take a chance on anything. Another loss would see many of their fans ditch the Bloods for other local teams that are winning like the Roosters or Rabbitohs.
“Leadership is about more than just being the loudest voice,” Cox continued.
“For this match, the team as a whole will lead. It will be democracy in action. It’s what the Greeks envisioned when they invented it.”
With no single captain, match-day decisions will involve plenty of input, with key tactical adjustments requiring unanimous agreement from the players currently on the field.
The Swans will take on South Perth this Saturday at Optus Stadium in Perth Perth, with fans eager to see if the team’s bold democratic approach will lead to victory or a chaotic new era of AFL leadership.
More to come.
