An ‘older’ elite athlete has been heaped with praise today, after deciding to return to pre-season early.

Like many other older professional footballers from various codes, Dayne Hunt is technically not required back at training until a week after most of the squad because of his age, and the years of footy under his belt.

However despite not actually being obliged to turn up to pre-season training until Monday next week, Hunt has impressed media onlookers with nothing else to write about at this time of year, by showing up.

The 28-year-old 112 first grade game veteran explained to THe Advocate that he cut his Bali stay a few days short so he could get back and help build the culture around the club.

“Another couple of days getting daytime drunk poolside in Bali would have been heaven, but I’ve decided to make the ultimate sacrifice and head home a couple of days before I had to,” Hunt said.

“It’s really important that I get back early to make sure that we establish the right culture around the club.”

“And as a leader around the club I think I can contribute a lot to the development of some of the younger guys at the club you know,” explained the old head who spent the entire first training session this morning standing alongside the coaches with his hat backwards and sunnies on telling the boys training ‘it starts here.’

“So yeah, I mean obviously I have given up a lot. Ending my 2 month holiday a few days early so I can come back and play sport for a living, but sometimes you’ve gotta make sacrifices in pursuit of greatness.”

Our reporters left after Hunt walked into the session telling the rest of the team how they don’t cut corners here, to the gushing of some local Rugby League journalists.
