In commemoration of one of the most memorable moments in Australian history, cult hero Eric The Eel has been named in the Parramatta Eels team of the century.

Eric Moussambani was given the honour during a special virtual ceremony earlier today, nearly 20 years after he took to the pool in the Sydney Olympics.

The fan favourite who is now the Head Coach of the Equitorial Guinea swimming team said he was honoured to be placed in the team.

“Initially I thought it was just a team for the 21st century, and I thought it was a bit of a sledge,” said the coach hoping to send four swimmers to the Tokyo Olympics next year.

“I mean, maybe Hindy aside, there’s not a lot in there is there? But then they told me it’s the team of the last century, and that’s a great honour,” explained the greatest Eel of the last 20 years.

“Great to have my name alongside guys like Sterlo and Kenny.”

Eric left the virtual function with some stirring words to the current team ahead of their game with the Brisbane Broncos this weekend.

“Get it together. Lift fellas, lift.”
