Much like the butterfly effect, one small, inconsequential decision has resulted in local woman Brooke Berthold feeling awful for an entire day, all of which was steered by her decision to take a different route to work that morning.

This occurred as a result of listening to a crime podcast the night before, which suggested women should switch up their walking routes as sticking to the same time and place every day made it easier for a predator to track you.

And, as someone who just bought a small can of aerosol to keep in her purse, it’s safe to say that Brooke tended to venture on the side of paranoia.

So today, Brooke has decided to forego her usual liner path to work in favour of a more scenic route – opting for a winding, leafy street that was substantially longer, but far prettier than her usual walk.

A decision that has proved immediately fruitful, as she spies a beautiful tabby basking in the small sliver in sunshine streaming just metres away.

“Awww hey there cutie!”

“Pspspspsppsps.”

Slowly stretching her hand towards the cat and making herself look as small and unthreatening as possible, Brooke had been so sure the cat would be receptive to her positive vibes, as why else would she have decided to take this particular route at this particular time.

Surely it was fate?

But as she inched closer, Brooke’s attempt to make friends was instantly rebuffed by the tabby, who took one look at her outstretched hand and immediately ran into some nearby bushes.

More to come.
