Share houses around the country are bracing for the return of that weird autumn limbo period where both the old oil heater and the old pedestal fan are in full use.
The change in seasons has prompted many to pull out their old oil heaters hiding under their beds—despite it still barely dropping below 20 degrees.
“Yeah, 20 degrees when you’ve had three months of humid summer just hits different. I was shivering last night,” explained Sarah Todd (24), an old inner-city terrace house resident.
Her housemate, meanwhile, has found themselves still using the old pedestal fan.
“I’m from Melbourne, so this still feels like summer,” said Tim Long (27).
Experts have confirmed that this is the period where every share house in the country gets into a passive-aggressive war over whether it’s “actually cold” or if people are just being dramatic.
The thermostat debate is further complicated by the fact that at least one housemate insists on sleeping with the window open year-round “for air circulation.”
In some share houses, desperate negotiations have already begun over whether to split the cost of a gas heater, despite everyone knowing full well they won’t commit to it.
Meanwhile, landlords remain blissfully unaware of the suffering, safe in their fully insulated homes with central heating set at a consistent 23 degrees.
As the great heater vs fan battle rages on, tenants can at least take comfort in the fact that the power bill argument is still eight weeks away.
