Cigarettes sold in Australia will now come with health warnings such as ‘toxic addiction’ and ‘poison in every puff’ printed on the filter, as part of the government’s crackdown on tobacco.
Much like the plain packaging laws enacted in 2012, which saw all cigarette boxes sold in drab brown packaging and depicting startling images such as a mouth riddled with cancer, or the infamous ‘Brian’, this new law is designed to deter young people from picking up cigarettes.
This comes as cigarettes have started becoming popular again, likely as a result of Gen Z’s infatuation with the late 90s and Y2K era, the fact that smoking does, and will always, look cool
For a generation that has mostly smoked illegal imports sold under the counter of a chinese tobacco shop, it’s unsure how effective these new packaging laws will be – especially seeing as the cigarettes look like something you’d find on Tumblr.
Or in Gen Z speak, they’re SO Lana Del Rey.
More to come.
