A local man has once again found himself thinking about the Nutty Putty Cave incident again, ruining what should have a nice Friday afternoon.
Sitting comfortably in his living room, James Walters, 31, was simply scrolling through his phone when his brain, acting entirely unprompted, decided it was the perfect time to remind him about the 2009 cave-diving tragedy, that he read about six years ago at 2 AM.
John Jones, a 26 year old cave diving enthusiast, attempted to navigate his way through a tight part of a cave when he took a wrong turn, and got stuck upside down for 27 hours. Despite a crew’s best efforts to rescue him, John eventually died of cardiac arrest due to the strain on his body. His body was never able to be retrieved.
“It just popped in there,” says James, staring blankly at the wall as the horrifying details flooded back, “I wasn’t even watching anything related to caves. I just find myself thinking about it quite often.”
“What a horrific way to die. Imagine being tightly constricted, upside down and barely able to breathe or see anything.”
“I start hyperventilating every time I think about it. I’m going to have nightmares for weeks now.”
