WE WANT YOU: In a bid to find the perfect candidate, a renowned media agency in Betoota posted a recent entry-level social media role on Linkedin that asked the BOLD question, “Do You Live and Breathe Social?”.
Applicants all too familiar with this job description know that in reality this phrase has all the markings of a low pay, high stress, and questionable work-life balance position.
The ad boasts about the agency’s vibrant culture and dynamic work environment focused on social media management. It emphasises the need for candidates who are “passionate about social media, always online, and up-to-date with the latest trends.”
The role also promises the excitement of working collaboratively with others while also being a “one-person show” where candidates are expected to juggle multiple roles – creator, editor, graphic designer, and social media manager – all for a poxy salary that barely covers their weekly groceries.
“How could you say no?” the job description continues as if the overwhelming workload and underwhelming pay are irresistible perks.
To soften the salary expectation blow, the agency reminds potential candidates that they pride themselves on their “fun”workplace culture, emphasising that they have (mandatory) office drinks every Friday at 5:30pm and flexible WFH hours (which only take place every second Tuesday). Not to mention the appeal of “getting paid to scroll on TikTok”.
More to come.
