Opposition leader Peter Dutton is today accusing the Federal Government, NSW Police, ASIO and the AFP of keeping him in the dark over something that he probably shouldn’t have been holding press conferences about because he isn’t the Prime Minister.
The finger-pointing and straw-clutching appears desperate for the embattled Dutton, after a nightmare fortnight of news scandals and policy backlash.
Dutton has emerged today from a week of hiding from the media to defend his dangerous and divisive rhetoric aimed at provoking further ethnoreligious tensions in Sydney.
This is the icing on the cake after being caught pulling a runner from Cyclone Alfred, accusations of historic insider trading, and his very poorly received comments about young mothers in the workforce.
But now his CV is being brought into question, with voters starting to question if he really was a ‘crack detective’ before venturing into property developing and politics, or was he just another slow-moving Sir Joh-era Valley copper.
For his entire political career, the multimillionaire property developer and Liberal Party leader has campaigned heavily on his three or so years spent in the Queensland police force. However, recent developments in the ‘Dural Caravan Bomb’ investigation suggests he might be out of form.
What Dutton initially described as “the biggest planned terrorist attack in Australia’s history” – turns out to have been not that at all. And it seems the police and intelligence agencies knew that too, which is why they weren’t treating it as such, despite the Murdoch press and the Liberal Party constantly attacking on them for not taking the investigation seriously.
Now, the AFP can reveal that our entire Parliament and millions of dollars in police resources have been consumed by a fabricated terror plot that Peter Dutton jumped all over after months of pushing racial hot buttons.
Even more embarrassingly, it appear that the elaborate antisemitic hoax was staged by criminals who had no ideological motives, and were simply looking to send the police on a wild goose chase that redirected attention away from the streets for over a month, with thanks to the misinformed Leader Of the Opposition’s daily press conferences.
