The Trump Administration has extended their warmest thanks to the Australia people for providing a “kind and thoughtful housewarming gift” – a handmade doormat from Point Piper.

“We’d like to send our thanks to President Trumbull and his government in Australia and our heartfelt gratitude is also owed to the people of Australia for their unwavering, blind support in the United States and all her endeavours,” said the letter. “The doormat will be placed to the west side of The White House, which has traditionally been used as a dog door.”

The letter then went on to describe the unique relationship enjoyed by Australia and the United States, saying that over the years a special bond has formed between the nations that will last until the end of time.

Speaking to the media this morning, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said there’d obviously been a mix-up and the correct doormat will be sent to Washington as soon as possible.

“While Mrs Teller at number one-seventy-seven Wolseley Road makes a fine doormat, there’s been a grammatical error on this account,” said Turnbull. “I’ve instructed the ambassador, Mr Hockey, to try to get it replaced as soon as possible.”

More to come.
