SMOOTH. CLASSY. BRAVE.
That’s the translation given for the new Icelandic advertisement featuring Macy Gray – which promotes international cigarette brand, Benson & Hedges.
The Ohio-born singer revealed in an interview with Reykjavík FM radio station Bylgjan, that her trademark raspy voice comes from her lifelong love of B&H Classics.
In the interview, the quintessential singer-songwriter says she didn’t taste the fruit of success until she began smoking at age 15.
“When I was in my early teens, my voice was cleaner than Stevie Nicks’,” says Ms Gray.
“Then I started smoking, which opened up a whole new vocal range,”
While other singers such as Bob Dylan and Jack White attribute smoking to reducing their vocal range, it’s evident that smoking full-strength cigarettes has had a paradoxical affect on both Macy Gray herself and her career.
“I’ve had no ill-effects of smoking,” says Ms Gray.
“It’s only made my voice rougher than a cat’s tongue,”
Foreseeable backlash has come from anti-smoking groups, which say Macy Gray has set a poor example for young people.
“Her comments are going to make young girls start smoking,” says Gwendolyn Bach from the Australian Tobacco Alternatives Consumer Association (ATACA).
“It’s shocking that people are still willing to lend their image to cigarette companies.”
When prompted whether she thinks promoting cigarettes is irresponsible, Ms Gray wrote that people should be “intellegent [sic] enough to make the right choice,”.
“If I could go back in time, I’d still smoke,” says Ms Gray.
“Cigarettes have given me so much in life and I feel like I needed to give something back,”
Macy Gray is headed to Australia for a string of dates beginning in March 2015. The R&B/Soul singer will tour behind her eighth studio album The Way, playing headlining gigs in Victoria, WA, NT, Queensland, and NSW and performing in South Australia as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
