Following the news that Australian tennis star Kyrgios has today faced the media – after beating Rafa Nadal – wearing a t-shirt that said “F*** Donald Trump“ – one local punter reckons he can finally get behind the controversial 21-year-old.
“I say good on him” says Josh Clapp (35) from the couch of his living room.
“He’s playing good tennis. He can do what he likes. I love seeing people stick it to these yanks”
Josh, like many sporting mad Australians, has waited a long time for an Australian tennis icon he can get behind like he used to cheer Pat Rafter.
“Lleyton won me over in the in. But it was a tough slog”
“The same thing is happening with Kyrgios. Mind you, he hasn’t made it easy for me”
“He’s got to be one of lippiest blokes out there. But if he can channel his energy into abusing umpires and Donald Trump, and still play good tennis. I reckon I’ll be able to get around him.
The contest in Sydney was the final event for Kyrgios ahead of next week’s Australian Open, and, having watched compatriot Bernard Tomic play David Goffin with his knee heavily strapped with ice, he and his team will be exercising “extreme caution” between now and Monday.
MORE TO COME.
